A couple of weeks again I mentioned that I would be starting another Edgar Allan Poe piece and that it would be for his short story "The Black Cat." I have the rough sketch finished and am now working on getting my reference and doing some final research and then I start working on the piece. In the meantime, here is what the rough sketch looks like. Let me know what you think about it!
Welcome back! Also, if you wishes to contact me about commissions, I will be out of town this week and will not have access to the internet. If you wish to contact me you can still submit on the contact page, or e-mail me. I just won't be able to answer them until Saturday. You can also call me. My number is on the main page.

Welcome back everyone! As I announced in an earlier post, I have started working on a new tale of Billy Beaver. This project has been getting a lot of my attention lately and I thought that it was about time to give you all an update on how it is going. Below is one of the pages that I have been working on. Within this book Billy will be meeting many new friends, one of them is in the image. I hope that this has everyone as excited about this new book as I am. I am almost at the stage where I will be sending it out to the editors of a book company. I currently have all of the pages laid out and now it is onto editing the text to get it exactly where I want it to be.
If you haven't yet seen "You Don't Understand", Billy's first book and adventure you can find the book on amazon at http://www.amazon.com/You-Dont-Understand-Jedediah-Kahl/dp/1484024613/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1366468662&sr=1-1&keywords=jedediah+kahl You can also get a preview of what the illustrations in the book look like on a past blog post entitled "My First Book: You Don't Understand" at http://jedediahkahlillustration.weebly.com/1/post/2013/05/my-first-book-you-dont-understand.html Stay tuned for more updates and exciting news from Jedediah Kahl Illustration. Howdy everyone! This past Thursday some friends and fellow artist from PCA&D got together to do a small hike and stop and sketch along the way. We all went to Rock State Park in Maryland in the Falling Branch Area and had a great time. Here is what I sketched on the amazing trip. It is nice to get away from the usual and do something different for a change. It had been quite a while since I just went somewhere and sketched what I saw. Needless to say, this will be happening more frequently.
Stay tuned for more hike and sketch news, news about the book I am working on and more art news in general. Welcome back everyone! I haven't posted any new greeting cards lately, so I thought that today would be a great to do just that. Here is a new one that I just recently made. Here is a greeting card for National Beaver Day. National Beaver day is a holiday celebrated in Canada on the last Friday in February. It is a day to celebrate one of their national symbols. Since I have been working with beavers for quite a while now, I thought that this holiday was fitting to be the next card that I made.
Stay tuned for another greeting card to be posted soon and so much more coming in the near future. If you haven't had a chance yet stop by the official Facebook page and "Like" us. Good morning everyone! I am now starting my final piece for Senior Thesis. This piece will be for Edgar Allan Poe's "The System of Dr. Tarr and Prof. Fether". This piece will be one of my most complicated pieces to date. Well, it will at least be the piece with the most people in it that I have ever done. It looks like this is going to be an interesting one. Between the musicians who are playing in weird places to the lady who thinks she is a chicken, how could this be anything but a fun piece to work on. If you have never read this tale by Edgar Allan Poe you can find it at: http://poestories.com/read/systemoftarr Here is the value study for this piece and all appears to be coming together. Now it is time to start doing the final ink work on the piece. Check back soon for more information on "The System of Dr. Tarr and Prof. Fether" and my mentorship.
Hello everybody! Well in the last update for "You Don't Understand" I mentioned that I was almost done with the book. Well I am happy and proud to say that I have all of the interior illustrations completed. Yes, all 13 interior illustrations have been completed and are laid out. I have also finished the book cover and now I just have to edit the text. Check back soon to see when "You Don't Understand" is completed and is available to be ordered. Also stop by soon to see updates on my Senior Thesis and my Mentorship.
Well Senior Year keeps rolling and Senior Thesis keeps moving. Now I am on my third piece. This piece will be an illustration for Edgar Allan Poe's "William Wilson". Below is the value study for the piece and soon I will start working on the inking of the final piece. If you have never read "William Wilson" by Edgar Allan Poe, you can visit http://www.online-literature.com/poe/47/ to read the whole story. It is well worth taking some time to read it. Like my other pieces for Senior Thesis, "William Wilson" is 12.75in x 19.25in. I don't usually work to this scale, but am enjoying how much detail I can put into the piece simply because of how large it is. By the end of the semester I will have 5 pen and ink drawings this size. All 5 of these pieces will be shown at the Senior Show & Celebration at the Pennsylvania College of Art & Design on May 3rd. Check back later this week to see the final ink drawing for "William Wilson". It should be finished by Thursday March 28th.
Hello! Well the piece is progressing. It has been a lot of work, but it has also been quite fun to work with it. I can't wait to have it finished and see how it looks because it is going to look fantastic. It is still very early in the piece. I have put in the first part of the sky (I know I will have to darken it up when I start working on the Giants), I have the ground pretty much done and I have started working with the trees and with the stones. I will be showing this piece at the Pennsylvania College of Art & Design's Senior Show & Celebration the first Friday in May. This piece will be hanging in the main gallery at the college for all of the world to see! Stay tuned for more news and updates on Senior Thesis, my Mentorship and on my book "You Don't Understand"!
Hello again everyone! I have some exciting news! I am almost finished my first children's book "You Don't Understand". I am really looking forward to having it published. This book is 24 pages long with 13 illustrated pages and follows poor Billy Beaver who can't understand why no one, not even his family understands him. Will he find out why? Find out when you read "You Don't Understand". Above is a page from the book. If you like what you see, then you are going to love the rest of the book. Stay tuned to find out more about "You Don't Understand", my Senior Thesis/Senior Show & Celebration, and my mentorship with Socar Myles.
Remember to "Like us on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/JedediahKahlIllustration Hello everyone, I have been putting in a bit of work on my mentorship and I thought I would pass on how it is going. I currently have the piece drawn out to size on Bristol board and have created a value study to help me lay out where my darks and lights are going to be. This is just a rough value study and things are going to change a little bit in the finished piece, but I think this is coming along quite nicely.
Stay tuned for in progress shots of "The Skilled Hunter" and on my third thesis piece "William Wilson". |
